Tottenham Hotspur entertained AFC Ajax at the new White Hart Lane earlier tonight looking to get a positive result in front of their home supporters. Spurs began the match on the back foot as the visitors dominated possession and took the lead in the 15th-minute courtesy of Donny van de Beek’s calm finish from close range. The North London giants fought tooth and nail but couldn’t make a breakthrough in the first half.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men got some control in the game after the half-time break but still couldn’t manage to take any of their chances in the final third. The match ended with a final scoreline of 1-0 in favour of the Dutch outfit.
Let’s take a look at how each Tottenham Hotspur player performed during the match against AFC Ajax.
GK: Hugo Lloris – 6/10
The French keeper did make a couple of world-class saves during the game but couldn’t keep a clean sheet which should disappoint him.
CB: Toby Alderweireld – 6/10
The Belgian centre-back found it challenging to cope with the threat of David Neres.
CB: Davinson Sánchez – 5.5/10
The Colombian defender was a bit reckless with his challenges to intercept the ball. He was guilty of giving away too many fouls.
CB: Jan Vertonghen – 6/10
The Belgian international had to go off the pitch after suffering a severe injury in the first half.
CM: Victor Wanyama – 5/10
He worked hard for Spurs at the centre of the park but lacked the invention to cut open the Ajax defence. It was a lacklustre display from him.
RM: Kieran Trippier – 5.5/10
The English full-back was full of energy down the right flank, but his final delivery from the wide areas let him down. To his credit, his indirect freekicks were often on the money, but unfortunately for him, his teammates failed to take any of their chances in front of the Ajax goal.
CM: Christian Eriksen – 7/10
The Danish playmaker was always looking to create chances for his teammates in the opposition half.
CM: Dele Alli – 6/10
He worked his socks off but didn’t have the quality required to trouble the Ajax defenders inside their own box.
LM: Danny Rose – 7/10
The English full-back defended valiantly down the left wing and provided support quite effectively going forward. It was another impressive display from Rose who seems to have made the left-back berth his own at the new White Hart Lane.
ST: Fernando Llorente – 5/10
The Spaniard was a constant threat in the air, but he was not able to take any of the opportunities that fell in his path.
ST: Lucas Moura – 5/10
The Brazilian was poor in the first half but put in a much-improved display in the second.
Substitutes:
CM: Moussa Sissoko – 7/10
His work ethic in midfield helped Spurs get a stranglehold in the game, but it was not enough to secure a result tonight.
LM: Ben Davies – 5/10
He didn’t provide much on the pitch after coming on for the final 10 minutes of the contest.
CB: Juan Foyth – N/A
Not enough time to make an impact.
