A few days back, reports from the Scottish Sun came out that Borussia Dortmund had joined the race to sign Celtic’s talented fullback Kieran Tierney in the upcoming summer. The Hoops had put up an asking price of £25m for the fullback, and that has apparently put off the Bundesliga heavyweights. Dortmund have deemed that price tag to be too expensive if latest reports from the Daily Record are to go by here.
Tierney has a lot of admirers in some of the top divisions across the world, and there is no doubt in our mind that he is easily worth that much. This has shown that Celtic are not going to be easy negotiators and has sent the message across all the heavyweight clubs that they need to shell top money to sign some of their talented players.
English side Arsenal are also said to be in the mix and in the current market, Celtic shouldn’t look to budge from their asking price. Tierney has the potential to be one of the best left-backs in the world in a few years and at just 21, he has proven his worth at Parkhead.
The defender has even captained his side on quite a few occasions. That shows high highly he is regarded by the Celtic board and coaches. It is quite evident that Celtic will have to part ways with Tierney at some point as he is too good a player to play in the Scottish division for a long time.
We thought that Dortmund could be an exciting prospect for the fullback as they play an exciting brand of football and have one of the best supporter bases around the globe. Moreover, the German heavyweights need to sign a left back as Marcel Schmelzer’s performance is going down.
The Scottish fullback could have been a long term option but it seems like Celtic’s price is just too much for the Bundesliga heavyweights. This is a big win for the Hoops as they have shown that they can hold on to their players even if some of the top clubs come calling in and they are not willing to fold so soon.
The sale of Moussa Dembele to Lyon in the summer of 2018 also plays a massive role in this as Celtic managed to make £20m out of him. So the Hoops have every right to demand their price, and they know that in today’s market, they can easily fetch £25m odd for Tierney. The fullback has everything to his game. Most importantly, the Scotsman is a committed footballer that should make him easily worth that much and then some.
