According to a recent report by Birmingham Mail, Wolverhampton Wanderers are being linked with a surprise loan move for Chelsea forward Olivier Giroud before the transfer window comes to a halt on Thursday night. The same report has also revealed that Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo is on the lookout for a new striker this month as he wants to add some competition for Raul Jimenez going into the second half of this campaign.
Giroud has been a sporadic feature in Maurizio Sarri’s first-team this season and needs to make a move away from Stamford Bridge if he wants to reignite his career in European football. At 32, time is not on the side of the French centre-forward as he only has a few years left in him to play at a high level.
Hence, a move to the Molineaux Stadium could help the Chelsea talent get some confidence back which could help him score goals on a consistent basis and be more productive inside the opposition penalty area.
The 32-year-old forward has featured in 27 matches for the Pensioners this term, scoring five goals while creating five assists across all competitions. Despite having a decent record this season, it is also worth noting that most of his appearances for Chelsea this season have come from the bench.
Giroud is also vastly experienced at the international level as he has made 67 appearances for the French national side and has 33 international goals to his name so far. He also played an important part in helping his nation win the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia last year when France beat Croatia 4-2 in the final to lift the prestigious trophy for the second time in their history.
The acquisition of a prolific talent like Giroud will undoubtedly bolster Nuno Espirito Santo’s attacking options at the West Midlands club. The Wanderers have currently got the likes of Jimenez, Leo Bonatini, Ivan Cavaleiro, Diogo Jota, Helder Costa and Adama Traore vying for a place up top in Santo’s starting XI.
So it won’t be an easy task for Giroud to stake his claim in the Wolves first-team as it is already brimming with some talented prospects. However, it could prove to be a massive coup for the West Midlands team if they can somehow find a way to lure the Frenchman to the Molineux, even if it is on a temporary basis, before the end of this ongoing transfer window.
