According to reports from Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie, Sunderland have wrapped up a loan move for Celtic’s midfielder Lewis Morgan. An official announcement could be made soon by the clubs, and Jack Ross is set to reunite with his former player in England after both of them worked together at St. Mirren in Scotland.

Premiership outfit Aberdeen were also targeting (The Express) this Celtic player, but it seems like the Black Cats have beat them to his signature. The fact that the manager and player had worked together before might have come in handy for the Wearside outfit in wrapping up this deal.

Morgan likes to play down the left side of midfield and can play as an outright winger as well. The Scottish international has started just one game in the entire campaign, and after the new signings of Oliver Burke and Timothy Weah (both of whom can play down the flanks), there was no doubt that Morgan would further struggle for game time. Brendan Rodgers made the right call by letting the 22-year-old leave on loan.

Sunderland are fighting for the direct promotion spot to get to the Championship after suffering successive relegations. However, they have been dealt a significant blow as they had to let go of their premier striker Josh Maja in this transfer window to Bordeaux. The forward had already contributed with 15 goals, and Ross needs to look at other ways to replace his goals.

Morgan was a star player for St. Mirren before he joined Celtic. However, the competition and quality of players at Parkhead have seen him struggle for game time. But, he remains a bright prospect, and we believe Sunderland have got a real gem on their hands for the rest of the season.

Naturally, a left-footed player, Morgan can be deployed as an inverted winger as well down the right flank. However, he had his best campaign with St. Mirren playing down the left as they won the Championship and moved to the Scottish top division. Morgan had managed 18 goals and seven assists in that promotion campaign, so that showcases that the player can make goal scoring contributions while playing from the wide regions.

Morgan might not be a typical winger with searing pace, but his technical abilities on the ball make him a dangerous customer in and around the attacking third. His ability to use both his feet comes in handy, and Morgan can have a significant impact in Sunderland’s promotion run. All in all, Jack Ross has made a top signing in the form of this Scottish international.
