Celtic have been linked with a move for Belgian international Timothy Castagne, and it was believed (Daily Mail) that the Hoops had decided to launch a £6m raid for the fullback. However, if one goes by one of his recent interviews, then the defender is keen to move (Daily Record) to either the English Premier League or the Bundesliga. The 23-year-old currently plies his trade for Serie A outfit Atlanta.
On asked about his dream destination, the fullback said (Daily Record),”I can see Germany and England, two competitions where it goes forward and there is less tactic than in Italy, as two competitions that attract me.”
The Belgian though has given enough indication to keep other clubs interested as he is keen to leave (Daily Mail) Atlanta as he doesn’t seem to share the best of relationship with their manager Gian Piero Gasperini.
The fullback has been irregular in the playing eleven and that has seemingly upset him the most. He added,”It’s my second year [in Italy] and I have to play. I do not want to have to say to myself every week: Maybe I’ll fall out of the team this week.”
The right-back has made ten appearances in the Italian top flight this season and he hasn’t managed to nail down a spot in the starting eleven. Celtic though are in desperate need of a right back as both Mikael Lustig and Cristian Gamboa are in the final year of their contract.
Lustig has continued as the first choice right back but the Swedish international has often been a weak link in the back four for the Hoops. The experienced 32-year-old gets away in the Premiership but he has often been caught out in tough Europa League games and if Celtic harbour hopes of beating Valencia next, then they should look to get an upgrade over Lustig.
Castagne is already a Belgium international and it remains to be seen whether he would prefer a move to the Scottish Premiership. Often top players from Scotland get noticed in the English Premier League so the player might be interested in a move to the Glaswegian giants. However, as of now, it seems like Celtic might find it hard to lure the fullback to Park Head.
The 23-year-old is like all modern day full back as he is strong on the offensive and can also do a decent job in defence. His qualities in both halves of the pitch should make him a prime target for the Hoops this month, and they should look to go all out to test the player’s resolve despite him claiming that he would prefer to move to England or Germany.
