According to a recent report by Standard Sport, Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas has revealed that he is not planning to seek a move away from Stamford Bridge during the winter transfer window. It was earlier reported that AC Milan was interested in securing his services on loan in January, but the Spaniard insists that he wants to stay and fight for his place at West London for the remainder of this campaign.
Fabregas’ current contract with the Pensioners expires next summer which means that he would be free to talk to foreign clubs in the new year. However, when Standard Sport asked him about a potential move to AC Milan, the 32-year-old said, “No, I haven’t spoken to anyone. Obviously in January I can sign with whoever I want (a pre-contract agreement for the summer) and probably this will attract many clubs.
“But so far, from what I can say right now, yes I will stay here until the end of the season. I play at Stamford Bridge, I’m happy, but of course every player wants to play more.”
The Spanish midfielder had to endure a problematic campaign at Stamford Bridge as he has fallen down the pecking order under Maurizio Sarri and has lost his place to the likes of Jorginho, NGolo Kante and Mateo Kovacic. Even Ross Barkley has seen more game time than him this season. However, the fact remains that Fabregas still has a lot to offer to the Pensioners as evidenced by his spectacular display against PAOK Salonika on Thursday night in the UEFA Europa League when he completely ran the show from midfield.
The former Arsenal sensation could be a key piece in Sarri’s plans if Chelsea are to compete on all fronts this season. Fabregas has often been used in the cup competitions so he still might get a lot of first-team opportunities as long as the Pensioners can go deep in the League Cup, the FA Cup or the UEFA Europa League.
At 32, the Spaniard is still one of the best passers in European football as he has a knack for spraying accurate long balls for the front players. His potential departure in January would have depleted Sarri’s squad significantly so his recent revelation would be a massive boost for Chelsea as they work towards securing some silverware at the end of this season.
