Manchester City does not have too many deadwood in their squad like the previous years, but they still need to move some players on in order to balance their books and ensure that the club is in a healthy financial position. The Citizens are currently the narrow favorites to win the Premier League title this season with Liverpool desperate to take the league title away from the Etihad Stadium.
Pep Guardiola’s side have also managed to qualify for the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League where they will face off against FC Schalke 04 in a two-legged tie. There are quite a few players who need to be sold if City are to make any significant additions to their squad next month.
Here are three players Guardiola should consider selling during the winter transfer period.
Eliaquim Mangala
The French defender has not featured for the Citizens this season which indicates that his time at the Etihad Stadium might be coming to an end. With John Stones and Aymeric Laporte in such great form, Guardiola also has the likes of Vincent Kompany and Nicholas Otamendi to rely upon if needed. Hence, it makes sense for City to part ways with him next month and put in an end to his miserable spell at the blue half of Manchester.
Oleksandr Zinchenko
The Ukranian midfielder has been a sporadic presence in Guardiola’s team this season. Even with Benjamin Mendy out, the City boss has preferred Fabian Delph to start ahead of Zinchenko in recent weeks.
The youngster is better of playing for a different club who can guarantee him regular first-team minutes. So Man City should not stand in his way if he does decide to leave in January in search of greener pastures.
Phil Foden
There is no doubt that the Man City teenager is exceptionally talented and is destined for big things in European football. However, he needs more game time if he wants to improve his game and become one of the stars of the future. Hence, City should let him leave on loan in January so that he can come back as a much stronger version of himself ahead of the new campaign.
