Reports from Daily Express as claimed by the Scottish Sun, suggests that Rangers goalkeeper Wes Forderingham is on the shortlist of Leeds United as they are currently going through an injury crisis in the goalkeeping department. It is believed that the Whites have made it a priority to sign a goalkeeper in the January window as the club’s regular no. 1 Bailey Peacock Farrell has been far from impressive and on-loan keeper Jamal Blackman went back to his parent club Chelsea after a serious injury.
The Rangers custodian has been at the club since 2015 and was a regular in his initial few years. However, with the Gers signing their former player Allan McGregor for free this summer, Foderingham has found chances few and far between in the first team. The 27-year-old has made just four appearances this campaign, and it doesn’t seem like he is going to challenge McGregor for the first team spot after the Scotsman’s recent displays.
Such has been Mcgregor’s form that he has even become the no. 1 for his national side Scotland in the past few months and even though he is in the final year of his contract, Gerrard did give an indication that he could extend his deal for few more years.
The veteran goalkeeper has defied all odds and is still going strong at 36. The Bears signed him on a short-term deal, but it seems clear that McGregor can carry on for another season or two quite comfortably. Given that Hull City released him after his contract expired, not many fans would have had that kind of confidence in their former goalkeeper’s abilities at this stage of his career, but he has certainly defied all odds.
Even though Foderingham played over 130 games for the Bears, he didn’t exude the confidence among the supporters which McGregor has brought in this season. There has always been a question mark over his ability, and we wouldn’t be wrong in saying that not many Rangers faithful would mind seeing him leave given the club has backup options in the form of Jak Alnwick and Robby McCrorie. We don’t see a team needing more than three goalkeepers in the entire campaign, and so Rangers should probably look to sell their English goalkeeper if a good offer comes from Leeds in January.
Academy product Robby McRorie should be the second choice goalkeeper if this move goes through as Alnwick is currently on loan to Scunthorpe United. McRorie seems to have the potential to be a decent backup option, and someone like McGregor mentoring the youngster should do his career a world of good.
