Joe Worrall who is on loan at Rangers was a regular starter for Nottingham Forest before Aitor Karanka took over the managerial duties at the club. Ever since the Spaniard took over, the defender fell down the pecking order and was eventually sent on loan in the summer. The defender has often gone to proclaim that he is at Ibrox just on loan and wants to return to Nottingham to play regular football for them. Now Karanka has come out and said that Worrall could definitely be back in contention if he comes back as an improved player.
Gerrard had already expressed his desire to sign him on a permanent basis. That could have only happened if Worrall would have been considered as a surplus to requirement at City Ground but a recent interview from Karanka does give us the scenario that the young English centre-back can still have a future in England.
Karanka was quoted as saying(via Nottingham Post),”I am really pleased because if he is enjoying it in Glasgow and he is improving, he will come back here, stronger. The only thing he has to do is show us that he is ready to play in this team. This team has four amazing central defenders. He needs to understand that for him, at 21-year-old, he needs to play football.”
On his possible future with the club the manager said,”For sure, this experience for him has been really good. If he comes back at the end of the season and he is a better player – and I hope he is, because he says he is enjoying it and improving – he will be part of the team.”
The Tricky Trees have the likes of Michael Dawson, Michael Hefele, Tobias Figueiredo and Danny Fox. They are doing relatively well as of now in the Championship and are currently four points off from the direct promotion spots. So if things go right, maybe Worrall would find it hard to make it into the starting eleven, but it’s clear that Karanka could give him a second chance.
The Englishman has been more or less impressive in his displays at Ibrox though he needs to bring consistency to his game. One thing he needs to improve on is his composure on the ball as the Englishman often has the tendency to hoof the ball away. Defenders in the modern day are expected to play out from the back and that could be one of the major reasons why Karanka ousted him from the first team and sent him on loan.
Given that he is 21 and English, the player would cost quite a lot for the Gers for a permanent move. Maybe Rangers are better off looking for another defender in the future after Worrall’s loan spell ends in Glasgow.
