Liverpool have extended the contract of their English forward Rhian Brewster after being touted to make a switch to Rangers this summer. The Merseyside club has confirmed on their official site that they have successfully extended the Under-17 world champion’s contract ahead of the new season.

The 18-year-old is currently recovering from a serious ankle injury which he sustained at the start of this year. In a recent interview with the club, Brewster expressed his delight and was quoted to have said, “It feels great. I’ve wanted to do this for a very long time now and I think it’s the right moment for me and my family. I’m looking forward to getting back fit and making some appearances.

“Since I got here the club has been amazing to me and treated me like family. It seems like I’ve been here my whole life, to be honest. It’s coming up to my fifth season now. I [still] remember my first training session. It’s amazing and I can’t wait to get started.”

Brewster was the top scorer of the Under-17 FIFA World Cup last year. His rich vein of form for the Reds’ youth teams was acknowledged by Jürgen Klopp when the English striker was named on the bench in a home fixture against Crystal Palace at Anfield in April 2017. However, the Liverpool starlet is yet to make a senior team appearance so far and will be eager to make his mark at Merseyside next season.

This recent development could be a big blow for Rangers as they will have to look somewhere else in search of a new attacking option this summer. Steven Gerrard is in need of a few more signings in the coming weeks if his team are to challenge on all fronts in the upcoming season.

The addition of Brewster would have definitely bolster Gerrard’s attacking options at the Ibrox Stadium. However, the fact that they are now well-equipped in the attacking third, especially after the arrival of Umar Sadiq earlier this summer, will soften the blow for the Teddy Bears. The potential acquisition of Brewster would have undoubtedly improved their team and added more competition for places within the Gers squad.
