Newcastle United have been tipped to make a move for Deportivo La Coruna defender Fabian Schar this summer. According to recent reports, the Magpies are planning to seal a move for the Swiss international during this summer transfer period. It is understood that the La Liga 2 centre-back has a £3m release clause and is now on Newcastle’s radar ahead of a potential move in the coming weeks.
Some sources are now claiming that the Tyneside outfit are on the lookout for a new defender with Chancel Mbemba having made the move away to Porto. It has now been suggested that Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez has identified Schar as an ideal option to take up the defensive duties at St. James’ Park.
Rafa is eager to bring in a new defender before the transfer window comes to a close and Schar fits the bill perfectly. The 26-year-old defensive ace has a contract which runs out in the summer of 2021 so Deportivo will be under no pressure to sell unless the Magpies decide to meet his £3m release clause.
Schar is exactly the type of player who can flourish under the guidance of Benitez if given the honour to lace up at St. James’ Park in the upcoming season.
The Tyneside giants had to endure a difficult domestic season last term but still managed to claim a strong 10th placed finish in the top tier of England. However, Benitez’s Magpies were able to avoid the drop and will now be expected to push on and challenge for a European place next term.
The potential acquisition of Schar will undoubtedly bolster Benitez’s defensive options at Tyneside. Newcastle United have an array of defensive talents such as Jamaal Lascelles, Chancel Mbemba Mangulu, Ciaran Clark and Florian Lejeune who are all competing for a place in Benitez’s best XI. The addition of Schar will definitely improve their team significantly and add more competition for places within the Magpies squad.

At 26, the Swiss international still has his prime years ahead of him which Newcastle could look to benefit from, in the next few campaigns. It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of Schar and whether he ends up sealing a switch to St. James’ Park before the start of the new season.
