Reports have surfaced linking Sunderland to Celtic youngster, Calvin Miller with talks of a potential loan move for the upcoming season. The 20-year-old is thought to be targeted by a number of English sides but the Black Cats currently lead that race. Tyneside manager, Jack Ross is known to have a number of contacts in Scotland which could facilitate Miller’s transfer to the Stadium Of Light.

Brendan Rodgers certainly would not mind sending the left-back out on loan since he has only used him in 4 games after the player’s debut in December 2016. Currently, Kieran Tierney is a cemented starter in the Hoops first team and Miller can only hope to one day replace the star.

The youngster still needs to undergo further development and the best way to do so is with regular first team football, something which he is not accustomed to at Parkhead. Miller started out his career as a striker/winger in the Celts youth ranks but was later converted to a left-back by Rodgers. He appeared in the 5-0 Scottish League Cup win against Kilmarnock earlier in the 2017/18 season with Kieran Tierney shifting towards a more central defensive role. Miller’s last competitive start was against the Killie as well during the league fixture in May.

He has shown sparks of brilliance from his limited minutes on the pitch and has the potential to one day become a major part of the Celtic unit. The Glasgow-born midfielder has represented Scotland at youth levels, 12 times for the U16 side and 13 for the U17. Miller has all the right attributes to turn into an effective modern day fullback. A striking left foot helps him deliver balls from his overlapping runs and also stretches the floor for his team’s attack.

Sunderland could use help from additional signings and Miller could the man to answer their call. Two consecutive relegations have left the side in a very difficult spot especially with the unsettlement of most of its players.

Bryan Oviedo, who is currently their only option at left-back has admitted that he could depart this summer if an offer comes in. When asked about his Wearside future, the Costa Rican international said, “I can not say because I have nothing concrete and I have to wait. I have to talk to my representative and talk to the club (Sunderland) to see what the plan is because I have two years of contract here.”

“I think Sunderland is a great club and I know they will want to return to the Premier League soon; Then, I will also wait to see what they tell me.”

Oviedo still values his position at the club and is not prepared to force a move out of the side. However, Ross could still use a backup option to further help his efforts in guiding the team back to the Championship, making this a lucrative deal for all parties involved.
