Manchester City have now turned into one of the strongest sides in Europe as the transfer funds available to Pep Guardiola have been put to good use in the last two seasons. The former Barcelona manager is now looking to further improve the quality in the squad and has been linked with a wide variety of stars for a move this summer.
But one player they are struggling to land is Jorginho.
The Brazil-born midfielder started his youth career at Verona but moved to Napoli in 2014. He took his time to establish himself and turned into a regular first-team star in the last couple of seasons. He was one of the first names on the team sheet for Maurizio Sarri’s side, that ran Juventus close to the league title last season in Italy.
A defensive midfielder with gifted technique and great potential, the 26-year old is now ready for the biggest stage and has shown great composure in the middle of the park against the toughest of opponents last season. He registered three goals and four assists in 33 Serie A starts and was one of the most consistent midfielders in the competition last season.
He can be effective at both ends of the field and his all-around ability to dictate the game makes him a superb fit in Guardiola’s style. The Spaniard used Fernandinho regularly in the no.6 role last season while Ilkay Gundogan had to cover him, due to lack of options.
So it does not come as a surprise that City are desperate for the signature of Jorginho. They are also linked with the likes of Mateo Kovacic and Toni Kroos from Real Madrid but have the Napoli man at the top of their wish list.
The Italian side are yet to give City the go-ahead signal and a deal has stalled since the start of the transfer window. However, Jorginho’s agent Joao Santos has now revealed that his move to Etihad is not too far away.
Speaking to the media recently, Santos claimed “City are working to satisfy Napoli’s demands.
“Any moment could be the right one,” he said, speaking about when the English side could make an official move. City are yet to make an offer for Jorginho but reports suggest that they are ready to pay up to £43m for his services. And at that price, in the current transfer market, a player with Jorginho’s potential is an absolute steal.
He solves the midfield problem at the club immediately, walking into the first team next season and will only make the squad under Pep stronger.
