Liverpool‘s target Max Meyer might just be out of reach of the Merseyside club as he is likely to make a switch to Ligue 1 outfit Marseille. The midfielder was going to be available on a free transfer as his contract with Schalke is set to come to an end by the end of the month. Arsenal were also interested in the midfielder but both the Premier League clubs have been put off by the salary demands of the player.
If reports are to be believed, then the 22-year-old midfielder was demanding a salary worth £4m a year and that certainly didn’t go down well with Liverpool who were in the race to sign him. The midfielder was regular for his side last term as he made 28 appearances in all competitions and managed just a solitary goal and assist. However, his major job was to keep things moving in midfield and shield the defensive line.
Meyer can play in a more attacking role as well as he can turn out as a no. 10 and his versatility would have been his biggest asset. However, with this deal not going their way, the Reds might look for new options and we look at three probable midfielders they can go after.
Jurgen Klopp can look to raid his former team to bring in more strength and options in midfield. Dahoud has been with Borussia Dortmund since the last season and went on to be a regular feature for them in the middle of the park. he made 34 appearances and is destined for big things. Liverpool can be a good fit for the youngster and he can take the game to his next level t the Merseyside club.
The Portuguese midfielder can also be a good bet for Klopp and the risk involved will be relatively less as Mario has got a taste of the Premier League with West Ham United. He can be a good utility player for Klopp’s side and his perseverance and work rate are his biggest assets. Apart from that, he even has a creative side to his game.
This move would have certainly excited Liverpool fans a few years back but now it seems that this move will be met with a lot of scepticism. It’s true that Gotze’s stock has gone down in the past few years but maybe reuniting with his former boss might bring the best out of him. He is still 26 and can be a good signing if he can go back to his former best.
