West Bromwich Albion suffered the heartbreak of relegation and finished at the bottom of the table in the 2017-18 campaign. As a result, they can lose out on some of their key players and Jonny Evans could be one of those. The 30-year-old former Manchester United defender has been linked with a move to various Premier League clubs and Leicester City have also joined the race to sign the Northern Irish defender.
The 30-year-old experienced defender could be available for a cut-price deal as he has his release clause set at £3m. Evans was previously linked with a move to the Blue side of Manchester last summer but both the parties failed to come to a deal. Now it seems that Manchester City have stopped their pursuit for the 30-year-old defender and now he might have to make do with a move at the King Power Stadium.
Evans didn’t play the last few games of the season for Baggies as he declared himself unfit and many saw that move as a clear indication that he wants to leave the Hawthorns. At 30 he can still be a good option for quite a few Premier League clubs and it is expected that he will soon find a new suitor in the English top-flight.
Leicester City have had an inconsistent season as they finished ninth. They were unable to have any sort of momentum and their season was marred with two poor performances after one good game. They used the likes of Harry Maguire and Wes Morgan as their preferred centre-back pairing and the two were average at best for the most part of the season.
Maguire did go on to improve his game in the latter half of the season and the England international is being linked with a move away from the club. Even Morgan is 34 and he will be entering the last year of his contract and one cannot expect him to continue performing at the top level for long.
Robert Huth’s contract is set to run out by the end of the month and that will leave the Foxes high and dry in their defensive options. Having a proven centre-back with Premier League experience is a must for Claude Puel at the moment and someone like Evans will certainly fit the bill perfectly.
It remains to be seen whether he will make a move to the King Power Stadium as some of the top six clubs are also eyeing him. Over there, he might be used more as a squad player but with the Foxes, he is likely to be the first choice centre-back option for them.
