Gerrard In Defensive Dilemma: Should Rangers Look To Make A Move For Former Chelsea Defensive Ace?

Scottish giants Rangers have taken a huge punt by appointing an inexperienced and unproven manager in the form of Steven Gerrard. He might have been a great player in his days and a good football pundit as well but managing a football club is totally a different ball game which a certain Gary Neville found out sometime back.

Steven Gerrard has already started to make some changes to the squad as they have secured the signings of Scott Arfield and Jamie Murphy and they are in need of a defensive cover to provide some stability at the back. In that regard, the Rangers boss can move in for his former Three Lions team-mate John Terry, whose contract recently expired at Aston Villa and the former England international decided not to renew it further.

The Gers were looking to bring in another of Gerrard’s former teammates, Martin Skrtel at one point in time but those rumours have seemed to die down as the Teddy Bears were not able to afford his weekly wages demands. The same problem could arise with John Terry as he was reportedly earning  £60,000-a-week at Villa Park. One cannot see the Gers paying that much for a defender as it will set them back on various fronts and signing Terry might mean the end of the road for their other probable targets.

The Rangers have a clear problem at the back as they conceded the most goals among the top six sides last season. They let in 50 goals in 38 encounters and that is certainly not going to be good enough to challenge for the title. The likes of Fábio Cardoso, Ross McCrorie, David Bates and Bruno Alves have had a below par season and Bates is already signed up by German outfit Hamburg for a free transfer.

It is clear that the Gers are in need of defensive stability and John Terry might just be the perfect man to solve their woes. Even at the age of 37, he led the Villans well and came perilously close to taking them back to the Premier League. The former Chelsea man can have a great effect on the pitch and even off it and his rapport with former team-mate Gerrard at the Ibrox might come in handy for the Gers.

However, it seems that his salary demands are going to be too much for the Gers. He might take a pay cut to play at a more competitive level but that will bring in other Championship clubs in the frame to sign him. Maybe now it’s time for Terry to play out the fag end of his career in MLS or in China where his wage demands won’t be an issue.
