Manchester United are being linked with Celtic custodian Craig Gordon. The 35-year-old stopper has played an important role in their last two years where they won consecutive trebles and it will be interesting to see whether Brendan Rodgers will let his Scottish goalkeeper leave in the summer.

Jose Mourinho expects that Sergio Romero might be on his way out of the club and he wants a solid deputy for David De Gea and the Portuguese seems to have zeroed in on Craig Gordon. In 2017 only, Gordon extended his stay at Celtic Park where he extended his contract up until 2020.

It is clear that most of the goalkeepers around the world will not even remotely have a chance of starting ahead of De Gea and that could be a problem in Gordon’s mind if he wants to at least compete for a No. 1 spot. The only game time he might get at Old Trafford is during English cup competitions and that might not be enough to lure him in.

The Scottish international managed 26 clean sheets in all competitions this season and he surely will be in Rodgers’ plan for the future as he will look to continue his team’s dominance in Scottish football.

It is highly unlikely that Jose Mourinho will be thinking of Gordon as De Gea’s replacement in a case where the Spaniard leaves. The only experience Gordon has in the Premier League is when he was Sunderland‘s No. 1 for some period of time.

Rodgers might only look to sell him if they themselves get a young proven goalkeeper at their disposal. Dorus De Vries is the current No. 2 and he, like Gordon, is on the wrong side of the thirties and his contract will be up in 2019. So selling Gordon currently won’t make sense from Rodgers’ point of view, until and unless they themselves sign up a proven stopper.

However, if there is a good offer on the table from Manchester United, Celtic might be tempted to sell the Scottish international as he is 35 and they will probably not get the amount of sale value later for him in one or 2 years down the line.

Though, Rodgers will certainly not like to break the backbone of a side all of a sudden. It comes down to Gordon’s wants and ambitions. He might become a Manchester United player which will be a great achievement for him at this point in his career but it very unlikely that he will get much game time at Old Trafford.
