Tottenham Hotspur have signed their star defender Davinson Sanchez to a new contract. The deal will see the player stay at the club till 2024. This is what the official club statement read.
“The Colombia international defender has enjoyed a successful first season in England after joining us from Ajax in August 2017. Davinson, 21, made his Tottenham debut as a substitute against Burnley in August 2017 and has gone on to become a mainstay of the side, impressing with his performances during 41 appearances for the Club this season. Having represented his country at youth levels, Davinson made his senior Colombia debut in November 2016, and has now won seven caps in total ahead of this summer’s World Cup.”
Spurs will be very happy with the first season of Sanchez who has impressed beyond expectations. The player was previously linked with Barcelona but Spurs managed to get their way with Sanchez.
“It’s true that I was always linked [with Barcelona]. There was an offer on the table, but you have to think about the conditions. I had just won the Libertadores and had to go to Barcelona’s second team. Although I was sure that I would finish up in the first team, because I have a lot of confidence in me and my ability to achieve important things, I played 50 games at Ajax and [that was] what I needed.”
Instrumental in the deal for Sanchez was Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino, who managed to convince the player to switch from Dutch side Ajax to Tottenham. “The first person I spoke with was Pochettino and I had the chance to go to Italy, but Mauricio convinced me. He was a central defender and I feel I can trust him, as what he wants from me seems very reasonable. He speaks to you face to face and I try to listen to him a lot.”
The young defender has played 41 games for the club and has quickly become a mainstay in the Spurs backline. He is fast, athletic and not shy of making a tackle. He has the energy to play week in week out and is good on the ball. The player still has a lot of time to mature and Tottenham will be hoping to keep the player even beyond his contract.
