Newcastle United are ready to move in the summer transfer market and reportedly are interested in signing Reims goalkeeper Edouard Mendy. The keeper stands at a towering 6”5 and is only 25 years old. He has been in excellent form in the French second division and has earned extremely positive reviews in France.
The custodian has played in goal on 31 occasions, keeping 17 clean sheets in the process. He has conceded 19 goals in 31 matches, which averages at 0.6 goals per match. It now seems his good form is attracting interest in the player with English clubs like Newcastle United and West Ham United in the lead for his signature.
The lure of playing in the English Premier League is certainly going to attract the interest of a rising star. It is the dream of many players who come to Europe to one day cut it out in the English league.
Mendy is reportedly one of the most underrated players in France and a move to England could help him prove his worth. The player is believed to cost around £2m in the current market, a bargain by all means for a top quality keeper who is deemed good enough to play in the English league.
West Ham also appears to be interested in him and want him to replace Joe Hart and Adrian. However, the other interested party is Newcastle United who are desperate to get a new keeper. Although Newcastle are more likely to sign Martin Dubravka, the signing of Mendy cannot be ruled out.
Dubravka has been on loan at Newcastle since January and has been extremely impressive on his little spell at the club. However, Newcastle now wants him on a permanent transfer from Sparta Prague but the player is likely to cost them £5m.
This might see Newcastle move in another direction to save funds for other transfers. Although a difference of £3m may seem little to most teams, at Newcastle it will be difficult to ignore that money. Their owner Mike Ashley has been extremely tight with his wallet at the club and that has frustrated the fans and the manager, Rafa Benitez.

It now remains to be seen if Benitez chooses to save money over Dubravka by getting Mendy or he chooses to go with the tested and tried Sparta Prague custodian to beef up his defensive department.
