Leicester City defensive ace Harry Maguire will decide his future with the club after the completion of the 2018 FIFA World Cup. The Englishman has successfully earned his spot in the national squad under Gareth Southgate amidst rising interest from several European clubs. Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola seems to be leading that race, heaping high praises on the 25-year-old after the two team’s League Cup tie this campaign.

Maguire arrived at the King Power Stadium last summer for £17m and has been a prominent figure in the Leicester backline. He has played every minute of Premier League football this campaign and has appeared in 44 games for the Foxes across all competitions, scoring twice and furthering 8 assists while conceding only 9 yellow cards.

We don’t think anyone needs to explain the importance Maguire holds in the Leicester squad. His commanding displays at the back makes the £17m Leicester paid for him a bargain deal in the current market, especially when players like Virgil van Dijk are going for £75m.

He started his footballing career with Championship side, Sheffield United after working his way out of the youth ranks. He was an early bloomer, which led to him making 188 senior team appearances with the Blades and being called up by Hull City in 2014. He shone on his loan outing to Wigan Athletic as well, making him a fitting character in one of those inspiring stories of what hard work and dedication can do.

It was inevitable that he would get called up for the World Cup after his compatriots John Stones, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling struck out in their respective sides this season. Maguire could be a long-serving player in the national side if he keeps up such standards on a regular basis.

Obviously, his chances will further improve if he can carve out a starting role at one of the elite Premier League clubs.

Manchester City certainly looks attractive after their domestic double win this season. The Citizens were at their dominant best this season, fuelled by some quality signings made over the past few transfer windows.

The defence alone costs over £250m after Aymeric Laporte’s arrival in the January transfer window. This could somehow act as a stumbling block for Maguire transfer if the player strongly considers his regular involvement. City might have to work out a deal to either offload any of the big names like Stones or Nicolas Otamendi, ideally in an exchange offer to Leicester or risk the chances of losing out on Maguire.

The player is ambitious and could make the switch but only if a starting spot is guaranteed.
