Celtic are lining up a sensational move for AC Milan centre-back Cristián Zapata this summer. According to recent reports, the Hoops are hoping to secure the services of the Colombian international in this summer transfer period. Despite bagging another domestic treble this season, the Celtic supporters are hoping that their club will recruit a dominant centre-half this summer ahead of another campaign in the Scottish top-flight.
Some sources are now claiming that the Bhoys are hoping to snap up Zapata, who has helped his side keep 5 shut-outs in 12 appearances during the course of this season. There is no doubt that the Colombian defender will strengthen Brendan Rodgers’ defensive options at Celtic Park if the Hoops can pull off such an eye-catching move in the summer.
Zapata has put in a number of solid performances as part of the AC Milan backline during the course of this season. He has featured in 20 matches for the Italian giants this term in all competitions. His current contract with Milan is set to run out in the summer of 2019. At 31, the Colombian still has a few years left in him to play at a high level which the Bhoys could look to utilise in the years to come.
Brendan Rodgers’ side has had another successful campaign at the top tier of Scottish football after pulling off a domestic treble this term. However, their performances in European competitions over the last few years has left a lot to be desired. They are in dire need to bring some quality players in this upcoming transfer period if they are serious about challenging in the UEFA Champions League next season.
The addition of Zapata will undoubtedly bolster Rodgers’ defensive options ahead of the new campaign. Celtic have the likes of Jack Hendry, Kristoffer Ajer, Dedryck Boyata and Jozo Šimunović competing for a place in the Hoops’ first-team. The potential acquisition of Zapata will definitely improve their squad significantly and add more competition for places within Rodgers’ squad.

The Colombian international is quite versatile and can operate in a number of different positions across the backline. Zapata primarily plays as a centre-back but can also be deployed at the right-back position which makes him a perfect fit for the Bhoys. It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of Zapata and whether he ends up making a switch to Celtic Park in the summer.
