Aston Villa are in contention to sign Porto’s prolific striker Moussa Marega. The forward has managed  23 goals and eight assists in all competitions and will certainly bolster the attacking options of Steve Bruce if they decide to make a move for him n the summer.

Aston Villa who finished fourth in the Championship are in with a chance for progression to the Premier League as they are in the finals of the playoffs and will take on Fulham at Wembley to know about their next season’s fate. They went past Middlesbrough in the semifinal and will be hoping that they manage to cross the final hurdle as well.

The Claret and Blue’s season has been built on a strong defence as they have conceded just 42 goals in their entire campaign and are only bettered by the top two sides i.e Wolverhampton Wanderers and Cardiff City, both of them conceded 39 goals in their season.

According to reports, Porto will demand a fee in the region of £35m and that could turn out to be a huge stumbling block for Aston Villa. However, if they qualify to the Premier League they certainly can pay that amount as the winner of the playoffs gets huge financial benefits.

Villa’s highest goalscorer in this campaign has been Albert Adomah who is a right-winger. He has managed 14 goals in the Championship this season. None of their strikers has managed to touch the 10 goal mark and that could be a cause of concern for Steve Bruce and that is probably the reason why they are looking to bring in Marega from the Portuguese giants.

A lot can depend on Villa’s promotion to the Premier League. Mali forward will certainly like to play in a country’s first division after a season like that in Portugal. He still has two years left on his contract and it will be easy for Steve Bruce to lure him if they win against Fulham.

Marega will be an upgrade over Villa’s current crop of striking options but it will be interesting to see whether he will be able to adapt his game to English football. The 27-year-old forward usually does well in a system where he is partnered up with another striker and he plays the role of a secondary striker quite well. Only time will tell whether Villa will pay the quoted amount for him and bring him to Villa Park.
