Arsenal are looking to secure the services of Bayer 04 Leverkusen goalkeeper Bernd Leno this summer. According to recent reports, the Gunners have opened talks with the Bundesliga club over the potential transfer of the German international when the transfer window opens in the summer. It is believed that the North Londoners are on the lookout for a long-term successor to Petr Cech with the Czech shot-stopper set to leave the Emirates Stadium at the end of this campaign.
Cech has been subject to a lot of criticism after making a number of high-profile errors which has cost his team some results during the course of this season. Hence, the North London outfit are keeping tabs on Leno as he will be a suitable candidate to take up the role of Arsenal’s number one keeper next season.
The German keeper has put in a number of match-winning performances for Bayer 04 Leverkusen this season which has caught the eyes of the Gunners chiefs. Leno has made 37 appearances for the Bundesliga side this term, conceding 47 goals while keeping 12 clean sheets across all competitions. He has also earned 6 international caps for the German national team and is a candidate to make it into Joachim Löw’s squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup which kicks off in Russia later this year.
The Gunners are currently lying in the 6th spot in the league standings with a total tally of 60 points after playing 36 games in the league. Although, they have had a poor campaign so far yet Arsene Wenger’s exit as the Gunners manager could see a period of change for the North London club as they look to establish themselves among the Premier League‘s top sides in the coming years.
The addition of Leno will undoubtedly bolster their goalkeeping options ahead of the new campaign. Arsenal have the likes of Petr Cech, David Ospina, Mathew Ryan Masey and Dejan Iliev vying for a place in their first-team. The potential acquisition of Leno will add more competition within the Gunners squad and improve their team significantly going into the new campaign.
