Recent reports claim that Manchester United are looking to bring in Paris Saint-Germain’s Neymar in exchange for Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial. The Red Devils have kept one eye on Real Madrid’s Gareth Bale as well but the Brazilian superstar will be a priority for obvious reasons.

Jose Mourinho is already setting up the bricks for an improved 2018/19 season and a major overhaul seems to be on the books. The weekend win over their bitter rivals will give them temporary bragging rights but other than that, not much else.

Manchester City have ran over them in the race for the Premier League title and have progressed one round further in the UEFA Champions League. Pep Guardiola has also bagged silverware through the EFL League Cup, beating Arsenal in the final by 3 goals to nil.

They still have a mighty task of overcoming the 3-goal deficit against Liverpool in the Second Leg of the European competition but Guardiola remains hopeful of the treble, if not the quadruple.

Mourinho is severely short stacked in the trophy department compared to the Spaniard, despite spending a boatload of cash on world-class talents. Pogba’s arrival alone cost the Red Devils £89m two summers back and so far the return on their investments have been lower than expected.

The Frenchman fell into the rough patch in recent times after facing an injury crisis and losing his spot to Scott McTominay for a couple of matches. Speculation of his departure has been high throughout the past few weeks and it would not come as a shock for him to put on a PSG jersey next season.

However, let us take a breather for a second. Just because Pogba is for sale does not mean that Neymar will quit the Parisian side that easily. Yes, the Ligue 1 outfit did underperform on the European stage but they were matched up against the 2-time reigning Champions themselves.

They were even more short-staffed without the Brazilian in the lineup for the second leg.

If anything, Manchester United still have ways to go in terms of returning to their former status as a European contender. PSG on the other hand, have a better system in place with a squad full of young talent.

Unai Emery’s replacement is already being lined and if any of the rumoured names does take up the managerial seat at the Parc des Princes, they can be a viable threat in the following season.

Neymar is better off biding his time with the French giants than making the switch to Old Trafford after just one season. PSG have a potential game-changer in their hands and their midfield is adequately stacked with Marco Veratti, Julien Draxler and Javier Pastore. At this moment in time, the 26-year-old might just be more valuable to them than Pogba and Martial combine.
