New York City FC manager Patrick Vieira has revealed that he is prepared to take the next step in his managerial career and make a move back to Arsenal. According to recent reports, the Gunners legend is ready to return to North London to succeed his former manager Arsene Wenger at the Emirates Stadium.

Wenger announced last week that he will step down as the manager of Arsenal after 22 years with the Gunners at the end of the current campaign. The former French international is currently managing in the Major League Soccer for New York City FC and has done a terrific job during his time in the United States.

Viera has disclosed that it would be hard for him to leave his current role with the City Football Group but has also said that he wants to manage in Europe. He has previously gained some work experience for CFG in 2013, firstly as a reserve team manager and then, as an academy coach in Manchester before making a switch to the United States. His current deal at New York is set to expire before the end of this year which could pave the way for him to make a move to Arsenal.

The Gunners have a tally of 57 points after featuring in 34 league fixtures this season and are currently occupying the 6th position in the league table. All of their hopes are on the UEFA Europa League basket with a hugely significant home clash against Atletico Madrid looming on the horizon.

The appointment of Viera could prove to be a huge gamble for the North London outfit as Viera is still relatively inexperienced in football management. However, he is an Arsenal legend and knows what it takes to win under pressure. The Frenchman could prove to be a shrewd appointment at the Emirates Stadium but only on a short-term basis.

Wenger’s team will do well to consider other potentially experienced candidates and not risk appointing a former player, just for the emotional attachment. Although Viera is not suited to take up the managerial role in North London yet, he definitely has a chance to take up that role in the future if he can prove his managerial credentials at the top level. It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of Viera and whether he ends up succeeding Wenger at Arsenal this summer.
