Manchester City Striker Eyeing A Return To His Former Club: Does Guardiola Need To Panic?

Former athlete. Now a journalist hoping to cover football no matter the league or country.

Manchester City’s star forward, Sergio Kun Aguero has expressed his desires to one day return to his boyhood club, Indipendente. The Argentine was quoted,“I always said that I would like to return to Independiente when my contract ends with City, which is in 2020. I am not thinking about that now. I am focused on finishing the season well and reaching the World Cup.”

Kun Aguero has been City’s leading goal scorer for the past few seasons now and has already racked up 30 goals in 37 appearances in all competitions this season.

Brazilian youngster, Jesus Gabriel was pegged to be the 29-year-old’s successor in the lone striker role but went down with a medial collateral ligament injury in the 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace before the start of the year. He has recovered to first-team football in recent times but still needs to undergo the re-adjustment period. The kind of form Aguero is in, no way Pep choose to field Gabriel ahead of the Argentine.

Aguero became City’s highest scorer (previously set by Eric Brook) after scoring the wining goal against SSC Napoli earlier in the season, which in turn helped his team progress to the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League competition. He is just one shy of 200 goals with the Citizens and is held in high regards by the manager.

So is the player’s statement necessarily a huge concern for City?

No. Aguero is still tied to the club for 2 more seasons, which will give Manchester enough time to plan out an ideal extension or to find an able replacement, given the financial leverage they have all thanks to their ownership.

The club is currently cruising through the Premier League with a 16-point lead at the top and still in the running for the UEFA Champions League trophy. They are through to the quarter-final stage of the European competition and are stacked favourably against Liverpool. The round of 16 tie against Basel was a favourable matchup as opposed to massive headaches Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur had to endure with Barcelona and Juventus.

Pep’s ambitions of landing the quadruple in the future is not a far-off possibility with Aguero still leading the attack. The former Barcelona head-coach finally answered all his critics this season and has already landed silverware – EFL Carabo Cup.

Aguero is still a world-class player and City should feel so lucky to have in the squad. He is at the peak of his career and seems to be getting even better with age. There is no need to panic. If he shows a similar bit of form next season, the bosses at Etihad are sure to work out some strategy to tie him down at the Etihad.
