The long-lasting rumour of Real Madrid chasing one of the two top keepers in English football has now taken a new turn. The Galacticos are clearly not happy with their custodian Keylor Navas despite the Costa Rican putting in some world-class performances over the last few years.
It is believed Madrid want a high-profile goalkeeper and are looking to bring in either David De Gea from Manchester United or Thibaut Courtois of Chelsea. The Chelsea custodian had sparked controversy recently after claiming that his “heart lies in Madrid”.
“My personal situation is related to the city of Madrid,” he said. “My two children live there with their mum. I have my daughter every day on FaceTime. She often tells me that she misses me. My son is still too small to communicate like that.
“Whenever I have the opportunity, I try to return to Spain. As a situation, it is not always easy. Yes, my heart is in Madrid. It is logical and understandable.
“If they want me, they have to contact Chelsea. We’ll see. But they have not done that. What is certain is that one day I will return to Madrid. I love Spain, I love the city, I spent three wonderful years there [with Atletico Madrid]. It is there that I became an adult.
However, he has now conveyed a new message to the club and the fans saying that he is going nowhere as of now and wants to continue as a Chelsea player in the near future. He wants to, however, sort out his contract at the club before he starts working for the FIFA World Cup in Russia in the summer.
“If I go to the World Cup with a clear idea, sign or wait another year, then I have a clear head at the tournament,” he told Sporza.
“I am still proud to play at Chelsea and I want to achieve success.” Courtois added: “I have one year [left on my] contract and feel good at Chelsea, at the end of the season we will sit down together and set out a vision. I know that I will be at Chelsea next year as well.”
It now remains to be seen whether his team can listen to his request and arrange a contract signing situation between now and the summer. As for the Blues, they will be looking to now bring down the number delicately without tilting the balance in the scales that has finally settled.
