Manchester United are in a complete mess since past few weeks despite defeating Liverpool last weekend. The jubilation was cut short when they were knocked out from the Champions League Round of 16 by Sevilla following a shambolic defeat at Old Trafford and the statements made by their mentor Jose Mourinho has perplexed the supporters further. They have almost secured a Premier League ‘top four’ finish, but the Emirates FA Cup remains as the only probabilistic hope to claim a silverware.
A few of their stars are likely to be released at the end of the season upon expiration of current deals and some are likely to be transferred out prior to the next campaign. However, a new deal to Marcos Rojo has somewhat clarified the Red Devils’ stance regarding the future of the Argentine defender whom Mourinho views in his long-term plans.
Rojo, 27, has missed out the majority of the season due to a knee injury sustained late in the previous campaign and has managed only 10 appearances so far this term. The Argentine is sidelined with another injury concern since the early February and is unlikely to return ahead of the international break.
He, however, still remains a major weapon for The Albiceleste in the upcoming World Cup football tournament and his significance has now been rewarded with a contract extension that will keep Rojo at Old Trafford until 2021, with the option of a further.
“I am extremely happy to extend my stay at this great club. When I joined, my aim was to help the team win trophies and we have done that over the past couple of seasons.”
Stated the former Sporting CP star who plied his trade to Manchester back in 2014 after completing a £16 million switch. The club was going through a turmoil at that period of time and Rojo struggled to ensure a regular first-team slot under the then boss Louis Van Gaal.
His game-time, meanwhile, increased significantly since Mourinho’s arrival as the Portuguese tactician handed Rojo frequent starts across all competitions. Rojo featured as a left-back during the previous World Cup competition four years back but has been switched to a central defensive role ever since his transfer to Manchester United.
He has certain limitations, but the energy, commitment and work ethic he brings to his side have impressed the gaffer. Mourinho has always preferred hard-working players during his managerial tenure and Rojo has earned the manager’s favour due to his utmost dedication.
“Marcos has gone from strength to strength over the past couple of seasons and has always shown great professionalism. Although his injury has kept him sidelined over these past few weeks, Marcos is working hard to return to full fitness. He is always ready to put his body on the line for this club and I am delighted he has signed a new contract.”
Mourinho has expressed his delight after tying the centre-back down for years to come whom he views as the one who suits perfectly in his football philosophy. Rojo’s stay has generated a mixed response from the supporters, but the gaffer is pretty confident in the Argentine’s ability to be a bigger success in this iconic football club.
