Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet is ready to fight for his place at Anfield. According to recent reports, the Belgian shot-stopper has recently revealed that he wants to stay and fight for his place in the Reds squad with the summer transfer window set to open at the end of the season.

The 30-year-old has not featured for the Merseyside club since the club’s disappointing 3-2 defeat versus West Bromwich Albion in the FA Cup on January 27. Mignolet has lost his first-team place to Loris Karius, who has become Liverpool’s number one this year. However, the Belgian international has now disclosed that he wants to remain at Anfield and fight for his place. In a recent interview, Mignolet was quoted to have said, “No, always the only thing you try to do is prove every time in training you are ready for when the chance comes along.

“It is never easy of course because I have never in my career spent time on the bench, but it is how it is and the only thing you can do is try to change it but it is never easy.”

The Belgian also revealed that he has spoken to Jurgen Klopp about his situation and added, “I’ve had a few conversations with the manager already and we have spoken about numerous things.

“I’m always open and he’s always open, you know how he is, but at this time it is not the time and place to do that”.

Mignolet has featured in 22 matches for the Reds this season, conceding 30 goals while keeping 7 clean sheets in all competitions. Only time will tell whether he can regain his place in the Klopp’s first-team in the coming months.

The Reds are currently sitting in the 3rd position in the Premier League table after their emphatic 5-0 win over the Hornets earlier in March.

Retaining someone of Mignolet’s talents will definitely improve Liverpool’s squad depth in the coming years. However, the Belgian has not been reliable in goal under Jurgen Klopp in the least few campaigns which is one of the main reasons why he has been demoted to the bench. It might be the best option for all parties if he is sold in the summer so that the Reds can bring in a fresh face who can compete with Karius for a place in Jurgen Klopp’s starting eleven.

It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of Mignolet and whether he stays at Anfield beyond this season.
