Southampton are currently finding themselves in a spot of bother in the Premier League, having lost 8 of their 18 matches so far this season. The Saints have not been able to notch up more than 17 points till now and are stranded on the 12th position in the league table.
Mauricio Pellegrini has been more than concerned with the current state of his side and is looking to bring in reinforcements to beef up the various departments in the January transfer window. He has eyed a number of players to add to his side, especially in the midfield, which has been an area of concern for the Saints since the start of the season.
The South Coast club is reportedly eyeing a move for the Norwich City midfielder Ben Godfrey, who is currently plying his trade at the League One club Shrewsbury Town. The 19-year-old English youngster is already attracting eyes of a number of clubs from the Premier League and Championship and might be in for a move to the top flight with Southampton looking to bring him into their fold.
The teenage sensation has made a name for himself as a defensive midfielder, equipped with immense physicality and the ability to keep the ball under his control for a significant amount of time in the middle of the pitch. He is also known for his ability in aerial duels, with his 6ft 2inches frame. Apart from being a midfielder, he can also be deployed as a defender and can bring his physical attributes to good use at the heart of the defence at times.
The Saints have been giving away the ball far too often in the middle of the pitch, which has hurt them time and again. This has made Pellegrino sceptical about the lack of quality in the side and has made him look for some fresh faces. The 19-year-old is highly rated for his ability to defend and pass the ball into the right areas to initiate counter-attacking moves.
However, Southampton will have to face tough competition from the likes of West Bromwich Albion and Swansea City in the pursuit of their desired player, as the two relegation-stricken Premier League clubs are also looking to bring the 19-year-old to their respective sides in the near future. Do you think Godfrey is the right man for the Saints?
