Sporting Lisbon have named their price for their talented midfielder, William Carvalho and have informed West Ham United that they could entertain offers in the region of £28million in January. The two clubs have made contact with each other during the past week, with the club from Lisbon indicating that a deal could be arranged before the transfer window opens in January.
This marks a surprising turnaround from Sporting Lisbon president Bruno De Carvalho. He had some harsh words for the West Ham United owners in the summer when the two clubs were involved in an ill-tempered wrangle over the Portuguese midfielder.
Sporting Lisbon accused the Hammers to have made an illegal approach and the deal just didn’t materialise thereafter. The news that the Portuguese club is once again willing to do business is likely to be welcomed by the Hammers’ supporters.
De Carvalho was quoted to have said: “There was this soap regarding West Ham United but it is not interesting, it is not important because there was nothing. If we finish what was a strange soap, let’s see.,” in a recent interview.
The Londoners are currently struggling in the Premier League and have recently sacked a fan-favourite manager in the form of Slaven Bilic, a few weeks ago.
New manager, David Moyes has now been tasked with saving the club from possible relegation. So January would be a crucial month for Moyes’ men as they attempt to recruit smartly and gather some wins under their belt.
Players of the calibre of William Carvalho can go a long way in turning those losses into draws and those draws into wins. The 25-year-old Sporting Lisbon midfielder has made 10 appearances this season, scoring 2 goals in the process. His physicality and defensive abilities in the midfield will be a welcome addition to this West Ham United team.
The Hammers are currently 18th in the Premier League table, just a point off Bournemouth and West Brom, who sit outside the relegation zone. They have scored a mere 11 goals and conceded 23 at the back. There’s a real lack of consistency in some of their players’ performances and David Moyes knows that the squad needs some injection of quality. And his prayers might be answered if West Ham United manages to secure this deal by fending off competition in January.
On Sunday, David Moyes will take charge of his first match with the club at Watford. And the Express reports that the manager will receive funds to sign up to four players in January. Do you think Carvalho will be one of them?
