Newcastle United have remained active in the transfer market despite the closure of the summer transfer window long ago. Rafael Benitez saw his summer transfer plans being curtailed due to a lack of ambition from owner Mike Ashley and now the gaffer wants to give his transfer plans a new makeover in the January transfer window.
Newcastle had a decent start to the season but lack of squad depth has raised questions over the side’s long-term stability. Benitez wants some heavy investment in the winter transfer window and is now seeking funds to reestablish the Magpies at the big stage.
According to reports, The Spanish gaffer is interested in Liverpool forward Danny Ings. Benitez was very keen to bring the striker in the summer but somehow, the move failed to take the necessary leap. Now the gaffer has renewed his interest in the forward and wants to pursue him in January.
There have been constant takeover rumours pouring in as Amanda Staveley is believed to have expressed her interest in buying a majority stake in the club. The rumour intensified when Staveley was seen in the stands at the St James Park during their 1-1 draw against Liverpool and then stormed into the tunnel.
Mike Ashley is open to selling his ownership of the club which he has overseen over the last 10 years. The Toon supporters are very unhappy over the club’s mismanagement and would welcome any move. Benitez might have a new problem as Ashley is unlikely to invest a significant amount in January if he wants to part ways with the club, which can cause further problems for the gaffer.
Ings hasn’t played much for the Reds as injuries have been a stumbling block in his development. The 25-year-old didn’t feature in the top tier last term and is yet to play his part this season. So this could be a concern for the experienced gaffer but given his talent and scoring records, he could turn out to be a bargain buy.
Ings is that kind of a player Benitez likes to coach. The former Burnley forward is a very controlled finisher of the ball and can make very good use of his height. He is also quite fast with his movement and can be a very good option to lead the attack for the Magpies.
Aleksandar Mitrovic has become an unpopular character following his elbowing incident and he could soon be offloaded which might pave the way for another arrival. Ings, currently, seems the best option.
