Manchester City are currently table toppers in the Premier League, having won six of their seven matches in the season so far with absolute dominance over their opponents. They are looking to keep their position intact for the rest of the season and clinch their third Premier League title.
The Citizens might look to add some new players to their side given their recent woes regarding the defensive lineup. Their biggest concern is the injury of their left-back Benjamin Mendy, which might keep him out of action for the rest of the season and might compel Manchester City to bring in another player to fill in the position when the transfer window reopens in January.
The gaffer Pep Guardiola, who was the main mastermind behind the arrival of the French left-back in the summer, might be willing to bring in a versatile player to deploy either in the midfield or in the backline in the form of his compatriot Sergi Roberto. Roberto is currently plying his trade at the La Liga leaders Barcelona. As per Don Balon, they might even be prepared to pay the €40m release clause for the talented Spaniard.
The 25-year-old is one of the few players in the La Liga, who can play equally well both in the right side of defence as well as the midfield. He is also comfortable as a left back if the situation requires him to do so. His brilliant runs with the ball and ability to vie for it with the opponents in the middle of the pitch has made him an asset for the Catalan club over the last couple of seasons.
His impressive record with the Blaugrana since 2010 has also helped him attract the attention of a number of big-name clubs from all over Europe and the list contains the name of Manchester City as well. Their present coach Pep Guardiola, who is also the former coach of Barcelona might make a bid for him in the future.
Apart from deploying him in the defence and preferably in the left back position, there is also a possibility that the player can be used as a defensive midfielder as well. His primary job, though, might be sticking to the backline and fending off opposition strikers as well as initiating counter attacks.
However, the Manchester club will have to vie big time with the Catalan club in order to get their prized possession out of Nou Camp in January. City might even look to pay Roberto’s release clause in order to get the player into their squad.
