Leicester City are believed to be watching Bacary Sagna very closely. The French international is currently a free agent having parted ways with Manchester City in the summer.
The 34-year-old was a part of the large departing contingent that left the Etihad Stadium in the summer. The defender was released by the Manchester-based club at the end of the last season as Pep Guardiola went on to oversee a complete squad overhaul. Sagna is still available to sign on the dotted line as he is yet to join a club since leaving the Sky Blues in June.
The Foxes are not very well equipped on the right-hand side of the defence and baring Danny Simpson, there are no other options at Craig Shakespeare’s disposal right now.
The one-time Premier League champions have room for players as they are yet to complete their squad quota of 25 players this season. So they have the advantage of signing him before the January transfer window if they really want.
Sagna featured in 17 games for the Sky Blues last season and gave a very good account of himself. The right-back is still going strong and would be a good cover for Simpson who has been in charge of the right back department for the last couple of seasons.
Sagna spent a long seven years at the Emirates Stadium and was at his peak form when he was at Arsenal. He left the Gunners for City for a different challenge but his career dipped a bit and he eventually had to be let go, in last season.
A number of clubs are keeping a tab on his situation but Leicester might be interested in giving the defender a short-term contract to prove his worth. Having played in the Premier League for a large part of his career, he would need no introduction of the English top tier.
Sagna is in no mood to rush himself in and is judging his options. The right-back can also be used in other positions in the backline and would be a good option given his current condition. The player is likely to be in good shape as he kept himself busy throughout the last season.
Moreover, Leicester won’t have to pay transfer money and Sagna’s wage is likely to be in Foxes’ range. Sagna will also be looking to move back alongside the top stars as he wants to attract the attention of Didier Deschamps who is due to pick up his World Cup squad. Can he do that at the King Power?
