Memphis Depay’s career seemed to have tilted in the right direction when he earned a big money move to Manchester United in 2015. But to everyone’s surprise, the winger struggled heavily at the Old Trafford and his stint in Manchester was short-lived as he was sold to Lyon in the January of 2017.
Much was expected from him, but he didn’t live up to expectations and soon was phased out from the first team. His form was so poor that he wasn’t picked for the FA cup final squad and subsequently, he was sold. However, the winger has recently claimed that he might soon play for Real Madrid. The 23-year-old made a very encouraging start to this season as he has racked up three goals and laid on as many goals for the French giants in the domestic league.
When he arrived at the Old Trafford he was handed the no.7 shirt which was worn by the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and David Beckham before. He was tipped to be the successor of the Portuguese superstar and even showed flashes of brilliance but he eventually turned out to be a disastrous signing.
On being asked, the 23-year-old made his stance very clear. “I think I’m going to play for Real Madrid. Yes that is a serious goal.”
“When the time will come? That only God knows. He helps me and takes me there.”
“At Lyon I am very happy. The club is, in a way, comparable to PSV. The family atmosphere, for example.”
Manchester United will have the first right of refusal as they had inserted a buy-back clause at the time of his move and going by his form, he doesn’t seem to have a future in England right now.
The left wing section at the Santiago Bernabeu is currently weak, as barring Marco Asensio, there isn’t any competition at the moment.
Cristiano Ronaldo has shifted to more central position although the likes of Gareth Bale and Lucas Vazquez can play their part on the left side. If Madrid are to go for a proper left winger, there are a number of talented players playing with full throttle at this moment.
The likes of Anthony Martial, Eden Hazard and Lorenzo Insigne are the obvious choices if Madrid want to ponder in the transfer market. Depay has all the skills and attributes to become a success in the Ligue 1 and instead of dreaming big he should concentrate on his career. But do you think he can land at the Spanish capital anytime in his future?
