Liverpool would have been happy with the way they started their campaign this term, clinching two wins out of their first three matches in the Premier League. However, that happiness was shortlived as they had a humiliating defeat and two frustrating draws in their next four matches, leading them to the seventh spot in the league table.
The Reds are well aware of the fact that the lack of good defenders is one of the biggest reasons for their downfall in the season, especially the need of a top class left back, who has proven his mettle over the last few seasons in the top flight.
Among an array of players who they have targeted for the future, one name which is right on the top of the list is that of the Algerian international Faouzi Ghoulam.
The 26-year-old has been an integral part of the Italian Serie A club Napoli since 2014. Having featured for them on 147 occasions so far in his career, the full-back has helped establish them as a powerhouse in European football and has attracted the interests of a number of big-name clubs including the Premier League biggies like Liverpool and Manchester City.
The Merseyside club are searching for a viable option to be deployed in their backline but have failed to find one since the last term. Jurgen Klopp is far from satisfied with the performance of the first choice left-back Alberto Moreno and benched him for most of the previous season, using central midfielder James Milner in his place, who performed well in his new role and led his side to a finish in the top four.
However, the German mastermind is well aware of the fact that a permanent solution for the aforementioned position has to be found without much ado and has made the 26-year-old Algerian international his prime target. The Reds might make a bid for the player in the next transfer window in order to strengthen their defence for the future.
Faouzi Ghoulam is known for his ability to defend the backline as well as make darting runs down the left flank to initiate attacks on the opponent goal. He is also equipped with the ability to fight for the ball in the air and make tackles to keep the opposition attackers at bay. Liverpool are hopeful that the fullback will be a very good addition to the side if they can land him in January.
