According to reports from Italy, Tottenham Hotspur were eye a move for Inter Milan goalie Samir Handanovic before the Nerazzurri decided to ignore offers and stick with the Slovenian international. Inter are extremely cautious not to miss out on their number one and are even willing to offer him a contract renewal to clear all doubts.
The Serie A giants had to reportedly wait for a whole year to reach an agreement with Handanovic last time when he finally signed a new contract in January 2016. However, with all the recent speculations and rumours, Inter Milan are in danger of losing him again with his contract ending in 2019.
Apart from Tottenham, Liverpool have also shown interest in the player, who have two faulty goalkeepers in Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius. The lure of the Premier League is huge and like every other top shot stopper, 33-year-old Handanovic will also want to end his career with a cherry on the cake.
The Lilywhites’ signing of Paulo Gazzaniga right at the last moment indicates how desperate they were for a goalie. Although the Argentine will be their third choice at the moment after Hugo Lloris and Michel Vorm, he will be fancying his chances to prove his mettle in the domestic cups.
Vorm is eventually expected to leave Spurs given the lack of first team performances and his contract expiring at the end of this season. And while Spurs don’t have any long-term problems under the bar with Lloris at the moment, the French custodian has attracted interest from top clubs and we never know what can happen.
His contract with the club is till 2022 and Spurs would expect to sell him for a mammoth price if they have to. Handanovic could be a good arrival then, given his immense experience under the bar. Despite their lost-European status, Inter Milan are a huge club and the Slovenian isn’t likely to leave that for being a second-choice.
He has played 208 times for Inter so far and is a regular starter. He has also been capped 81 times in national colours. An academy product of Slovenian side NK Domzale, it was Serie A side Udinese that recognized his talent back in 2004 as he came on a free transfer. And it took numerous loan stints with clubs like ACD Treviso, SS Lazio and Rimini FC before he broke into the first team of Udinese.
FCInterNews has stated that his agent Fali Ramadani had met with Piero Ausilio to discuss the possibility to Handanovic leaving for Liverpool or Spurs before he stayed with them. Inter now want him to extend his contract by a further year. So should Spurs intervene a sign him up?
