Manchester United’s defence of the Carabao League Cup was to begin as Burton Albion came to Old Trafford. United notched immediate control when the visitors did arrive as superb goals from Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and a deflected one from Lingard caused enough damage. United won convincingly on the night sweeping past the minnows. Here’s how the Red Devils have been rated.
GK: Sergio Romero – 7/10
Made a crucial save after the scoreline was 2-0. Hardly troubled otherwise.
RB: Matteo Darmian – 7/10
Did a tidy job and prevented any attack from happening on that side.
CB: Victor Lindelof – 6/10
Looked a bit rusty and low on confidence. This really has to change and the Swede might take time.
CB: Chris Smalling – 6/10
He was untroubled today and looked sharp. Decent.
LB: Daley Blind – 7/10
Complimented Martial well down the left and added neatly to the attacks while going forward. Defensively he didn’t have huge things to do. Good day for the Dutchman.
CM: Michael Carrick – 7/10
It was a typical Carrick performance. Calm in the midfield and kept his composure and contributed to the flow of the ball with unparalleled ease.
CM: Ander Herrera – 6/10
His energy and enthusiasm looked evident today and he tried his best to contribute to the attack and be incisive.
RM: Jesse Lingard – 8/10
Burton were troubled with his movements all evening as he came in and looked to link-up efficiently. He got the assist for Rashford’s opener and scored one himself even though that took a heavy deflection.
CAM: Juan Mata – 8/10
Showed excellent ball control all evening and his shot hit the post as well so he was unlucky to not get a goal. He was in cruise control today.
LM: Anthony Martial – 8.5/10
He was simply excellent and his footwork was gorgeous. He took his goal well and made it seem like FIFA video game on the pitch. Terrific!
ST: Marcus Rashford – 8/10
Took both his goals brilliantly and did justice to whatever he received. The golden boy nominee has had a great start to the season.
Substitutions
FB: Luke Shaw – 6/10
Got some much needed minutes under his belt and did decently after replacing Darmian at half time.
CM: Scott McTominay – 6/10
Showed his willingness to go forward and he looked confident being there with the first team players. He surely has to play a role ahead as the season goes on.
GK: Joel Pereira – 5/10
Another game with the first team but at fault as United conceded.
