Arsenal started this new season in an enigmatic fashion as they fought from behind to get the better of Leicester City in a mouthwatering fixture. Arsene Wenger splashed the cash in the market to bring long term target Alexandre Lacazette at the Emirates Stadium but the gaffer is likely to extend his hand to a number of targets.
This could be a make or break season for the gaffer who signed a new two-year extension with the club. The intent was there in the first match but still, there is a scope for a lot of improvement. If reports are to be believed the Gunners are plotting a move for Real Madrid starlet Marco Asensio. The 21-year-old was one of the shining stars for Madrid as Los Blancos lifted the Championship League and La Liga title last season.
With the current crop of a talented pool of players, Asensio is not guaranteed of first team game time as Isco and Gareth Bale are much, much ahead of him, when it comes to the team selection process.
But the youngster’s quality hasn’t been ignored as the Spanish international started 11 games in La Liga last term. This season too, he has already started to spill the magic as he scored a very important third goal against Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup first leg, to give his team an edge as they go into the second leg in a few days time at the Santiago Bernabeu.
A Mallorca youth product, last campaign was Asensio’s breakthrough season and he will be very keen to make real use of it. He scored a hat-trick in the opening match of the U-21 European Championship as the La Roja went on to appear in the final.
But they lost to a much superior Germany by a solitary goal but his performance in the tournament gave the opposition defenders nightmares.
Asensio is touted to be the successor of Cristiano Ronaldo who, despite his age, has no intention to stop anytime soon. The Portuguese superstar has been in superb form and looks to carry it into the next season with an eye on the upcoming World Cup, which will be a compromising scenario for Asensio.
Arsenal are ready to push for a deal and need to convince the star with a promise of ample first team game time. With Alexis Sanchez’s future hanging on a thread the Spaniard’s arrival will boost Arsenal’s chances this season who are badly in the pursuit of their 14th Premier League title.
