Sunderland’s Fabio Borini is on his way to joining Celtic, according to reports. The 26-year-old has been linked with a move away from the Stadium of Light and Parkhead seems to be his next destination. The Black Cats’ relegation this summer made them very vulnerable in the transfer market and a number of big players are expected to depart from the club. Jermain Defoe has already left the club for Bournemouth and Borini could be the second player on the trot.
Sunderland’s financial position is not among the very best and they will be preparing to sell some of the players to balance their books. Borini’s availability would not be heavy as Celtic will have to splash £6m to take the Italian all the way to Scotland.
Rodgers has previously teamed up with the player at Liverpool and Swansea City and knows the player very well. Borini hasn’t had a very enjoyable season as he has netted only two times in his 24 appearances for the Black Cats. But Rodgers has shown this season that he can grind out the best from a player he trusts and a move for Borini makes sense.
Celtic dominated the domestic season as they claimed a treble in Scotland this term. They also made history as they lifted the Scottish Premiership title without losing a single game in the league. Rodgers’s managerial expertise does make him a very prominent figure but with the Champions League also in the reckoning, he is expected to make some radical changes to get things right in Europe.
Borini is a very intelligent player who can be deployed in a number of positions. He can be placed anywhere across the front three and also be deployed in the midfield. He has a contract till 2019 but should be available for a cheap price which Celtic can afford.
Borini can form a formidable trio with Scott Sinclair and Moussa Dembele. He needs to give a push to himself to give his career a fresh start and this could be the time for the Italian.
With the reports pouring in, let us take a look at how the fans have reacted on Twitter.

Borini rumour back on the table. No bad signing but £6m?! That seems a lot for a player who hasn’t shown much quality of late.
