West Ham United Determined To Solve Their Goalkeeping Conundrum: Is This Polish International The Answer?

It seems Slaven Bilic has decided to pick up the pieces left by the elite few of the Premier League now. Reportedly, West Ham United are now targeting a move for Arsenal’s loan-return goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny after wrapping up things with Manchester City’s Pablo Zabaleta.

After a disastrous summer transfer window last year, Slaven Bilic has stopped running after the hot prospects it seems and is rather focusing on the already established individuals in the league. The winter buys of Robert Snodgrass from Hull City and Jose Fonte of Southampton were indications of that. And while Snodgrass proved a failure, Fonte has solidified West Ham’s defence to a large extent.

Definitely, the whole Hammers squad needs to upgrade, but one of their immediate needs is an assuring shot-stopper. The Hammers have conceded a whopping 64 goals last season. Despite it not being the worst defensive record in the league, Bilic is ought to be concerned as relegated side Middlesbrough among others finishing below them have a better record.

Bilic had given ample time to both his goalkeeping options- Darren Randolph and Adrian. And both faced a huge slump in their performances despite starting decently. Adrian was the first-choice, who conceded 25 goals in 16 outings. Randolph had started from the EFL Cup and FA Cup mainly and his impressive displays earned him a regular place in the league. But he ended up conceding 39 goals in 22 appearances.

Of course, West Ham’s nervy defence is to blame for most for this, but some stunning saves here and three would always lift up the team. And Szczesny could be a perfect candidate for the side at the moment. The Polish international has become a fan favourite at AS Roma with his vibrant displays under the bar. He has been fabulous conceding 38 goals in 38 outings for the Serie A giants, helping them to finish second above the likes of AC Milan, Inter Milan and Napoli.

While it is difficult to confirm if Arsenal are willing to leave their already established goalie this summer, especially after his phenomenal display, West Ham will surely test the waters.  There have also been reports of Arsenal’s second choice David Ospina moving away from the Emirates with Turkish side Fenerbahce a likely destination, which might even force Arsenal to keep the 27-year-old.

West Ham definitely don’t hold the edge over their competitors here as they have finished miles away from European qualification. However, the London side does have money and if they willing to splurge it on him, he could be a huge addition to the side.
