The January transfer window is yet to start in its full swing. Most of the Premier League clubs are yet to start their shopping but the rumour mill hardly stops circulating transfer rumours. We are now getting the news that Express Sport claims that Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino has enquired about taking Atletico Madrid winger Nicolas Gaitan on loan.

If Poch can make this deal go through, this could be the best deal of the January transfer window. The Lilywhites have come a long way in recent weeks to come back from a poor form and now sit third in the table. They are just seven points off the top at the moment and considering the form they are in, the addition of a player of Gaitan’s caliber could very well help Spurs land the Premier League title.

Gaitan sealed his move from Benfica to Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2016 but things are not going his way at Vicente Calderon. Even though Simeone will be keen to keep hs priced asset at the club amidst interest from Spurs, the temptation of playing regular first-team football will be too much for Gaitan to resist.

Argentina have produced some amazing technically gifted players over the years and Gaitan is no exception. He has every ability that one attacking midfielders dreams of having. A left-footer who is also able to play on the right, with good dribbling skills and close control, Gaitán’s main asset is his ball distribution as he is able to cross from either flank, and while on the right he possesses the vision to pick holes when cutting inside.

Erik Lamela’s absence with injury has hurt Spurs badly this season as they are missing that directness from the wide areas. Both Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen are quality players but they prefer to be deployed centrally. On the other hand, Heung-Min Son is way too inconsistent. Gaitan is blessed with an enormous versatility. You can play him as a number ten or on either flank and you can be sure that he will deliver.

On top of Gaitan’s creativity, his industry and defensive work rate raise his stock even higher. Spurs are a team who like to press their opponents and make their life hard and Gaitan is a tailor-made player in that system. If Pochettino can pull this deal off, this could easily be the best transfer in January. Maybe ‘THE’ transfer that will help land Spurs the title.
