Chris Smalling has emerged as a surprise transfer target for Arsenal, according to reports. The English defender had been sidelined with a foot injury but has played the last two matches.
Jose Mourinho signed Eric Bailly as the only defender in the summer. Bailly and Smalling had been favoured by Mourinho in the heart of United defence until both the players got injured. Since then the gaffer has been using Marcos Rojo and Phill Jones as the central defensive pair and they have done a commendable job.
With Bailly set to leave to take part in the AFCON United are ready to make a move for Benfica defender Victor Lindelof. Although it is being reported that Benfica are very reluctant to sell him and are ready to make him stay by offering a new contract, the Red Devils will launch a £38 m offer for the defender.
Should United sign the defender it would be very hard for Smalling to get a first team chance and Arsenal could use this opportunity to make a swoop.
