Three months in the 2016-17 season have flown by and here we are at the frustrating juncture of the 2nd international break in such a short span of time. But instead of sulking, we decided to take a look at the performances of the players who have surprised us this season. These might not be path-breaking performances but these 3 players have certainly taken us by surprise when it comes to the dedication, commitment and the way a couple of them have adjusted to their new surroundings in such a short span of time.
The trickster from Southampton, as he was initially labelled with his nice footwork and the fancy tricks and flicks, earned the traditional move from the Saints to the Reds. This is his third year in Liverpool colours and it is safe to say that Lallana has finally found the mentor who can unearth his full potential.
Lallana has been used in a midfield 3 and has added a whole new dimension to his game. His pressing, his work-rate coupled with his skills has been a vital part in making the front three of Coutinho, Firmino and Mane click.
The England international has scored 3 goals and has notched up 5 assists already and it is safe to say he will be notching up his highest haul in both the categories.
Wenger was forced to splurge in the market for a defensive recruit due to the long-term injury to Mertesacker. While there were slight doubts regarding his ability to settle according to the fast tempo and continue his playing style which was essentially that of a ball-playing centre-half, 11 matches into the season and he has gently surprised us.
Forming a formidable pairing with the experienced Koscielny, the duo have been phenomenal for the Gunners. His individual stats make for a good read as well. Mustafi has already made 43 clearances and 27 interceptions. He has a high passing accuracy of 84% which is impressive due to the nature of the passes he attempts.
The Tottenham Hotspur flop who failed to crack the first team code and was finally moved on this summer transfer window. But the big money move did not seem such an exciting prospect then.
He certainly had the attributes but found it difficult to amalgamate into an attacking and expressive Spurs outfit. And because of this, there were doubts regarding his adaptability in a tepid West Brom set-up where his major duty would have been to track back. But he has taken everyone by surprise and in just 7 appearances he has notched up 4 goals and 2 assists which is remarkable given Pulis’ tactics.
