London club Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly monitoring 1899 Hoffenheim’s defensive giant Niklas Süle. Mauricio Pochettino wants to get in some defensive cover in the January transfer window and a move for the 6 ft 5 in centre-back is believed to be high on the agenda for the Argentine manager.
Tottenham have been unbeaten in the Premier League so far but lost their first game of the group stages in the Champions League to AS Monaco. With the league being more competitive this year and the team’s commitments in other competitions, squad depth is an absolute necessity. So Spurs would be better equipped with quality backups in an important position of the defence.
What about Süle?
Süle spent his youth career at four clubs including Walldorf, Eintracht Frankfurt, SV Darmstadt 98 and 1899 Hoffenheim. He joined his current club in 2010, at the age of 15 and since then remained there making a considerable impact graduating through the group stages and playing for its reserve side for one year before getting his breakthrough into the senior squad.
The defender got his first taste of senior football when he was 18 and now at 21, he has already made 79 top flight appearances for his club.
The 21-year-old made quite an impact in his first full season for Hoffenheim earning high praises with his gritty displays in what was otherwise a defensively terrible season for the club where they conceded 70 goals ending as the second worst defensive record of the Bundesliga.
In a season where the experienced campaigners made mistakes, the unerring calm displays of the young defender stood out. Hoffenheim remarkably finished that season in 9th place as they overturned their goals conceded column with the goals scored stat at 72 goals, which was the third best offensive record for that season in German Bundesliga.
After putting in consistent displays for two more seasons, Süle has now become one of the mainstays at the back for the Die Kraichgauer. With his ability to win tackles and providing blocks alongside the height he brings on the scene, the German makes his presence felt in the games he plays.
He has also been awarded a call-up to the national team recently in August 2016 and even played against Finland, his only international cap so far. Tottenham will be signing a player with great potential in Süle, if Pochettino makes a move for him in January.
With his career on the rise, a move to the Premier League can be a good thing for the Hoffenheim man as he already has what is needed to thrive in the English league in terms of physicality. With the backup defensive options not exactly being great at White Hart Lane, a move for this German man-mountain would be very appropriate for the Lilywhites.
