Manchester United have started their new Jose-era in their domestic season with silverware. Jose Mourinho, the new manager at the club, has managed to provide Silverware in his very first game and will be hoping to continue his good work all throughout the next season. Claudio Ranieri’s Premier League title winning side managed to put in a strong effort against the Red Devils and managed to hold them off for most of the game but a late winner from Zlatan Ibrahimović was enough for United to seal the victory on the day after Jesse Lingard and Jamie Vardy found the net.
Leicester City will have plenty of positives to take from their performance from this game but Manchester United were slightly the better side on the night. Let’s take a look at the player ratings for the Manchester United team for this game.
David de Gea (6.5)
Did not have any chance to stop Vardy’s goal, as he took the right decision to not bring the English international down in the penalty area and risk a red card. Was generally comfortable otherwise throughout the game.
Antonio Valencia (6)
Set up the winner with a superb cross from the right side as he allowed Zlatan to get the better of the Leicester City defenders. Was an assured presence at the back for most of the game.
Eric Bailly (7)
Bailly showed some great signs of his ability at the back as he was disciplined yet strong in his displays, at the centre of the defense for United against the likes of Jamie Vardy. Showed enough potential to warrant a place in the starting XI come the start of the season.
Daley Blind (6)
Was given the chance to play at the back for United after Smalling’s injury and slotted in beautifully alongside Bailly to help Manchester United to silverware in their first game this season.
Luka Shaw (7)
Shaw showed great pace and strength on the left side of defense as he was a constant threat in the final third to add to his strong defensive performance on the night.
Michael Carrick (6)
He stuck to his task of keeping the ball moving in the midfield as he was hardly tested with the ball at his feet by Leicester City and had a decent outing on the night.
Marouane Fellaini (5)
Was given a free moving role in the middle where he helped in attack as well as in defense but his mistake with a back-pass gave Leicester City the goal and had his team fighting for the game till Zlatan’s goal in what was a less than impressive performance.
Jesse Lingard (7.5)
Scoring in the FA Cup final at the end of the last season and now in the Community Shield victory, Lingard is slowly becoming an impact player at the club and will have a decent role to play in the upcoming domestic season.
Wayne Rooney (6)
Hardly the attacking threat the he once was, Rooney, did not look at home in a number 10 role as he hardly created a chance for his team-mates in what was a relatively dull game for the United skipper.
Anthony Martial (6.5)
Showed great promise on the left side with some direct running but was not able to keep it up for a long time as he faded away during the game and was subbed off.
Zlatan Ibrahimović (7)
He scored the much needed winner from a headed goal as he helped Manchester United to a trophy in his first official game for the club as he announces himself in England.
