Rangers could not start their Premiership campaign as they would have wished for as they had to settle for just a 1-1 draw with Hamilton Academical. However, Mark Warburton’s boys came back from the disappointing result with a 5-0 hammering of Peterhead FC in the Scottish League Cup. Even though the Gers have bolstered their squad extensively this summer in order to push for the title after their comeback to the top tier, something still looks missing in the jigsaw and Warburton will be looking for the missing link until the transfer window slams shut.
Rangers are in talks to sign former Marseille and Charlton defender Rod Fanni, according to Le10 Sport. Despite the addition of Clint Hill and Lee Hodson, Rangers are still in need of defensive reinforcements and an experienced customer like the French international would be a shrewd addition.
The 34-year old Frenchman spent the second half of last season on loan at English Championship outfit Charlton Athletic, after failing to settle at Qatari side Al-Arabi SC following his move to middle east last summer. The veteran French defender now wants a move back to Europe and as per Le10 Sport, Rangers have registered their interest in him as well as his former club Marseille.
Fanni has played as a right-back during most parts in his career but he can also be deployed as a central defender. With the Frenchman losing a yard of pace with age, playing regularly at the heart of the defence will elongate his career. The Gers are in dire need of a fourth central defender to contend against the likes of Kiernan, Wilson and Hill and Fanni, with his immense top-level experience is well capable of doing that.
The versatility of the Frenchman will offer the manager plenty of options to make alterations to his back four. Rangers need a cover for their skipper Lee Wallace and even though Fanni cannot slot in as a left-back, new signing Lee Hodson can do that while Fanni can deputise or replace James Tavernier in the right-back position.
Rangers have added a wealth of experience to their side this summer with players like Barton, Hill, Kranjcar and Fanni also fits the bill. The former Nice, Lens, Rennes and Marseille defender can be a big influence in the dressing room.
