Tottenham Hotspur were arguably the best team in the Premier League for most of the last season but failure to clinch the title as well losing the second spot on the final day to none other than rivals Arsenal will be haunting the Spurs fans. Mauricio Pochettino’s side are in the Champions League this season and will be hoping for a strong showing out there but a strong push for the title will definitely be their biggest priority.

The North London giants haven’t enjoyed too much of an eventful transfer window this summer having signed just two players in the form of Vincent Janssen and Victor Wanyama. Winger Georges-Kevin N’Koudou is all set to become Spurs’ third signing of the summer but still there are a few areas in the squad those needs to be addressed by Pochettino.

We will look at three areas Spurs still need to reinforce before the summer transfer window closes or else they will stay left behind by their rivals.

Central defence

With the loan departure of Federico Fazio to Roma, Spurs are just left with three senior central defenders right now which is far from ideal. Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen are clearly the first-choice at the heart of the defence while Kevin Wimmer is a solid backup but when a team in contending in Europe, at least four central defenders are needed. It will be a long season for the Lilywhites and parting ways with Fazio before getting a replacement was a poor judgement from Pochettino. The Argentine still has time to make up for his poor move and has to bring in a quality defender at any cost in the coming days.

Central midfield

Tom Carroll, Ryan Mason and Nabil Bentaleb are still Spurs players but it is as clear as daylight that Pochettino does not rate any of them highly. That leaves the North Londoners with just Eric Dier, Victor Wanyama and Moussa Dembele in the middle of the park. Both Dier and Wanyama are more of defensive minded players which means Spurs will struggle for creativity at the deep if they fail to bring in another central midfielder. (Note: Bentaleb is close to moving to Schalke)

Attacking midfield

Spurs need a backup for their prime creator Christian Eriksen. We saw Dele Alli featuring as a number ten last season while Eriksen mostly played on the flanks. However, with Champions League football this season, Spurs need more of a patient approach in some games and Pochettino should act in the market to bring in more creativity into the side.
