Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing a move for Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw next summer. According to recent reports, Spurs are ready to offer him an escape route out of Old Trafford when the summer transfer window opens at the end of the season. The 22-year-old’s future at Manchester is up in smokes once again after the defender was substituted at half-time versus Brighton & Hove Albion last weekend.
The England international was also subjected to further criticism in Jose Mourinho’s post-match press conference following their FA quarter-final clash on Saturday night. It is believed that the full-back has been left frustrated while playing under Mourinho and it is increasingly likely that he will be looking for a switch out of Old Trafford at the end of the campaign unless the manager departs the club first.
Shaw is a boyhood Chelsea fan and some sources are now claiming that the defender is aware of the growing interest on his signature from a whole host of clubs which includes Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal and Everton. The English fullback could be reunited with his former manager Mauricio Pochettino at Spurs if he decided to leave United after fours years at the club since making a switch from Southampton in the summer of 2014.
Spurs are currently in 4th place in the league table, just five points above Chelsea with just 8 league games remaining this season. The North Londoners are hoping to finish in the top 4 spots so that they can ensure Champions League football for another campaign. They managed to earn a valuable 4-1 victory at the Vitality Stadium courtesy of a Heung-Min Son brace and a goal each from Dele Alli and Serge Aurier versus Eddie Howe’s side in their last league encounter.
However, Spurs are still an enormous 20 points behind the league leaders Manchester City and are in dire need to bring in some quality reinforcements next summer in order to bridge the gap between themselves and the bigger clubs in the coming years. The North Londoners have the likes of Ben Davies and Danny Rose vying for a place in Mauricio Pochettino’s starting eleven and the potential signing of Shaw will definitely add more competition for places in the Tottenham squad.
The addition of Shaw will undoubtedly bolster Pochettino’s defensive options going into the new campaign. He has featured in 19 matches for United this season but is yet to find the back of the net. It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of Shaw and whether he ends up making a switch to North London in the near future.
