Manchester United are preparing themsevles for a summer overhaul of their squad and may look to secure the signature of Paris Saint-Germain midfield enforcer Marco Verratti in a blockbuster swap deal involving Paul Pogba. According to recent reports, the Europa League winners already have a plan in place for a summer overhaul of their current squad to try and improve their chances next season.
The Red Devils manager Jose Mourinho has had his fair share of disagreements with French midfielder Paul Pogba and now, the club’s loyal fans are hoping that any animosity between their gaffer and the player will be resolved soon. However, the 25-year-old French international has struggled to find consistency on the pitch, which has led to speculation linking him with a move away from Old Trafford.
Some sources have recently revealed that there were plans in place to swap him in exchange for PSG midfielder Marco Verratti as both players share the same agent in the form of Mino Raiola. However, that possibility seems far off with the Red Devils still believing that Pogba is a player for their future and everyone involved in the red half of Manchester are determined to make it work with the French talent.
The Reds of Manchester are currently in the second place in the league standings with a tally of 65 points in 30 league games. In any other times, Jose Mourinho’s club would be well in contention of securing the league but the outstanding form of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City has seen them fall behind in the race for the league title.
The potential departure of Pogba could leave their squad significantly depleted but the arrival of Verratti will definitely soften the blow if any such swap deal does take place in the summer. Pogba has scored 3 goals and provided 10 assists in 27 matches for the Red Devils in all competitions. However, his form has dipped since the turn of the year which has seen the likes of Scott McTominay, Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera replace him in the United first-team in recent weeks.
Meanwhile, Verratti also has a similar record in France, scoring twice while creating 7 assists in 35 appearances for Paris Saint-Germain this season across all competitions. His stats prove that he is more than capable of filling Pogba’s shoes at Old Trafford while also providing adequate protection to the backline. It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of the two French midfielders and whether they end up swapping clubs in the near future.
